Baseball weekly awards announced

Feb. 23, 2010

La Salle sophomore Jon Gyles (Doylestown, PA / Central Bucks West) and Villanova senior righthander Brian Streilein (Staten Island, NY / Brick Memorial) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 player and pitcher of the week, respectively, in voting conducted by the city’s head coaches and sports information offices.

Gyles batted .636 (7-for-11) in three games for the Explorers at NC State. Two of his five hits were doubles and he drove in five runs. He had at least two hits in all three games.

Streilein struck out 12 batters in 6.2 scoreless innings on Friday in a 13-2 victory at Norfolk State. He scattered three hits and walked three. The 12 strikeouts are the most by a Wildcat pitcher since 2002.

The Big 5 will announce its weekly player and pitcher awards every Tuesday throughout the season. The fifth annual all-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the end of the season.
