Big 5 announces weekly baseball award winners

May 11, 2010

Temple junior catcher Ryan Ferguson (Glen Mills, PA / Garnet Valley) and Saint Joseph’s senior righthander Chad Simendinger (Newark, DE / Salesianum) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 player and pitcher of the week, respectively, in voting conducted by the city’s head coaches and sports information offices.

Ferguson, also the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, batted .591 (13-for-22) with a home run and seven RBI in five games last week. He had at least two hits in all five games and added four doubles.

Simendinger struck out eight batters in 7.1 innings in a 5-4 victory over Fordham on Sunday. He allowed just one earned run and scattered five hits.

The Big 5 will announce its weekly player and pitcher awards every Tuesday throughout the season. The fifth annual all-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the end of the season.
