Gyles and Holland earn baseball honors

La Salle sophomore first baseman Jon Gyles (Doylestown, PA / Central Bucks West) and Saint Joseph's sophomore righthander AJ Holland (Margate,NJ / Holy Spirit) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 player and pitcher of the week, respectively, in voting conducted by the city’s head coaches and sports information offices.
Gyles batted .529 (9-for-17) with a home run and 11 RBI in four games last week for the Explorers. He became the 14th player in the country to hit for the cycle this season on Friday, when he drove in seven runs, including the game-winner in the 12th. He has 35 RBI in 33 games this season.
Holland did not allow a run in 9.2 innings pitched in a pair of appearances for the Hawks. The sophomore scattered seven hits and earned the win versus St. Bonaventure.
The Big 5 will announce its weekly player and pitcher awards every Tuesday throughout the season. The fifth annual all-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the end of the season.
